ıııııı ııııı ııııı ıııı ııııı ııııııı ıııı ıııııı ıııııııı

Al-Imaam Muhammad bin Seereen ıııı ıııı (d.110 AH) said,

ııııı ıııı ııı ııı ıııııı ıı ııı ııı ııııı

"They (the Sahaabah and the Taabi'een) used to consider themselves upon the path (of truth) so long as they held onto the Athar (the Prophetic Narrations and those of Companions)." [Reported by Imaam al-Laalikaa'ee (d. 418 H) in his Sharh 'Usoolil-I'tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah, no.110.]

Know 'Ayyuhal-'Ikhwah wal-'Akhawaat, may Allaah grant me and you success with what He loves and what pleases Him, that from the manners and characteristics of the Salafus-Saaleh (pious predecessors) would be their consistency and persistence in doing various acts of 'ibaadah (worship) and 'amalus-Saalih (righteous actions) from the nawaafil (supererogatory and optional deeds), especially siyaam (fasting) during the day and the tahajjud and Qiyaamul-layl, whether during Ramadhaan or outside of it, as well as in the summer and winter.

So they would implement the advice of the Messenger of Allaah (ııı ıııı ıııı ıııı ):

ııııı ııııı ııııı ıııı ııı ıııııııı ııııı ııııı ııı ıııı ııııı ıııııı ıııııı¡ ıııııı ıı ııııııııııı ııııı ıı ııııı

"Observe the Qiyaamul-layl (Night-prayer) because it was the manner of the righteous people who came before you, and it is something that draws you near to your Lord. It wipes away sins, prevents one from sinning and removes the sicknesses from the body." [Reported by Ahmad and At-Tirmidhee and it is declared saheeh by Imaam al-Albaanee.]

On the authority of al-'Alaa' bin Saalim who said:

ııı ııııı ıı ııııııı ıııı ıı ıııı ıııı ııı ı ııı ıııı ıııı ııııı ıııı ııı ıı ııı ıı ıııı ııı ıııı ı ıııı ıı ııı ııı ııı ıııı ııı ııııı ıı ııı

"Mansoor bin al-Mu'tamir as-Sulamee al-Koofee (a well-known student of Sufyaan Ath-Thawree ıııı ıııı ııııı ) used pray on his rooftop so when he died, a little boy said to his mother: "The tree trunk which used to be on the roof of Aali fulaan (the family of so and so), I don't see it (anymore) what happened to it? (In a state of shock and grief), she said to him, "Oh my son! that wasn't a (tree) trunk that was Mansoor and he died!"

ıııı ııı ııııı ıııııı ııı ııııı ııı ııııı ııııııı ııııı ııııı ı ııı ııı ıııı ıı ııı ıııııı ııı ıııı ııı ıııı ıı : ııı ııııı ıııııı ı ıııı ııııı ıııııı ıı ııı : ııııı ııııı ıııııı ıı ııı ııııı ıı ıııı ııı ııı ıı ıı ıııı ııııı ııı ı ıı ıııı ııı ııııı

Therefore the noble Salaf were very keen to conceal their acts of worship and obedience such as Qiyaamul-layl. A man asked (Aboo Ruqayyah) Tameem bin Aws ad-Daaree (ııı ıııı ııı), "How do you pray at night?" He got very angry and said, "By Allaah, one rak'ah that I pray in secret in the small hours of the night is more beloved to me than praying the whole night long and then telling people about it."

ıııı ıııı ııııııııı ıııı ııııı ııı ı ıııı ııı ııııı ııı ıııııı ıı ııııı ı ıııı ııı ııııı ııı ıııı ıııı ıı ııı ııı ıııııı

And Ayyoob bin Kaysaan As-Sakhtiyaanee (d.131AH), ıııı ıııı ııııı used to spend the entire night in prayer, then when the fajr approached, he would go back to bed and lie down, and when the subh (morning and sunrise) came, he would raise his voice (talking) as if he had just woke up.

Ayyuhal-'Ikhwah wa 'Akhawaat, some of the Salaf would apply the kuhl on the eyes so that the people wouldn't know that they were up all night in Qiyaam.

ııı ııııı ıı ııııııı ııı ıııı ııı ıııı ııııı ııııı ıııııá ıııı ıııı ııııı ıı ııı: ıı ııı! ıııı ıııııı ııııı: ııı ıııı ııı ıııı ııııı. ıııı ııı ııııı ııı ııııı ıııı ıııı ıııı ııııı ıııı ııı ııııı

Mansoor bin al-Mu'tamir used to make qiyaamul-layl at night and fast during the day over the course of sixty years (straight), and weep excessively. So his mother said to him: "Oh my son! have you murdered someone? So he said: "I'm aware of what I have accumulated upon myself." So when the sunrised, he would apply kuhl on his eyes, oil his hair, put chap balm on his lips and go out amongst the people.

And in another narration,

ııı ıııı ıı ııııı ıııı ııııııı ıııııı ııı ııııı ıııı ııııı ıı ııı : ııııı ııııı ı ııııı ıı ııı ıııı ııııı ıııı ıııı ıı ıııııı ıı ıııııı ıııııı ı ıııı ııı ıı ııı ııı ıııı ııııı ı ııııı ııı : ıı ıııı ııı ıı ııı ıııııı ıı ııı ııı ıııı ıııı ııııı ıı ııııııı ı ıııı ıı ııı : ıı ııııı ıııı ıııı ıııı ıııı ıııııı ııııııı

He would be weeping in the night, the crying of a bereaved child, which resulted in his mother feeling sympathy for him, So his mother said: "Oh my son, did you kill someone? By Allaah, if you have killed a person, his family will become aware of what you caused him to suffer and endure from your compassionate tears."

So he said: "Yes Oh mother, I killed a person." His mother now terribly anxious and nervous, said: "Who is this man that you murdered, Oh my son so we can tell his family with the hopes that they might grant you forgiveness?" He said: "Oh my mother, I do not need to inform anyone, because I have only killed myself, I have killed my soul with sins!"

When they reached the age of forty and they would eagerly look forward to reaching this age, they would roll up their beds and become more serious and dilligent in performing Qiyaamul-layl.

ıı ııı ıııı ııııı : ıı ııı ııııııı ııııı ııı ııı ııııı ıııııı ııı ıııı ııııııı

On the authority of Ibn 'Abbaas (ııı ıııı ııı): "That whenever the people of al-Madeenah turned forty years of age, they would devote themselves completely to 'ibaadah (worship)."

ııı ııııı ıııııı ııı ıııııı ıı ııı ııııı ııııı ıı ııııı ııııı ıııı ıııııı ı ıııı ııı ııı ııı ıııııı ııııııı ıı ıııı : ıı ııııı !! ıııı ıııı ııııı ıııı ııı!! ıı ıııı ııı ııııı

The rigteous worshipper, 'Abdul-'Azeez bin Abee Rawwaad (ıııı ıııı ) would spread out his bed to sleep on at night, place his hand on it but become sensible (and felt that something was better) and said: "How soft you are! But the bed of al-Jannah (Paradise) is softer than you!" Then he would stand for his salaah (until fajr).

ıııı ıııı ııııı ıııı ııı ıııı ııııı: ııı ıııı ıııııı ıı ıı ııııı ııııı ııá ııı ıııı ıııı ııııı ııı

And he would come to his bed, place his hand on it saying: "You are truly soft and that which is in the Jannah (Paradise) is softer than you." And he continued praying through the whole night.

ııı ıııııı: ıı ııı ıı ııı ııııı ııı ıııı ııı ı ııı ııı ııı ıııı ıııııı ııı ıııııııı ıı ıııı ıııı ııııı ııı ıııı

And what has come from the Aathaar (authentic narrations) concerning 'Abdullaah bin Mas'ood (ııı ıııı ııı) is that he would stand up for the Qiyaam when the eyes had settled down to sleep, a continuous humming could be heard from him like the droning of bees until sunrise.

ııııı ııı ııııı ıııııı ıııııı ııı ıııı ııı ııııııı (ııııı ıııı ııııı)ı ıııı ııı ıııııı ıııııııı: ııı ııııı ııııı ııııı ııııı ıııı ııı ııııı ııııı ııı ııııııı ıı ııı ıııııı ııııııı ıııııı ııııı ııı ıııııa ıı ıııı: ıııı ııı ıııı ııı ıııııııı

And that is the extent of the Salafus-Saaleh being very diligent and keen upon the performance of that 'ibaadah (the worship of Qiyaamul-layl).

And Aboo Sulaymaan ad-Daaraanee said:

"If Taawoos was to lie down on his bed, he would change and fluctuate like the turning of a bean or seed in the frying pan, then he would become firm, straighten himself, face the direction of the Qiblah and pray up until the rising of the morning, then he would say: "The bird remember the jahannam (hell-fire) while the rest of the 'Aabideen (righteous worshippers) slept (during the night)."

As for the pharse concerning Taawoos (ıııı ıııı) who passed away in the year 106 hijree that:

ııııı ıııı ııı ııııı ııııı ııı ııııııı

"...he would change and fluctuate like the turning of a bean or seed in the frying pan..."

This reminds us of a narration reported in As-Sunnah of Ibn Abee 'Aasim (ıııı ıııı) that, Awf bin 'Uthamaan informed us saying: Baqiyyah bin al-Waleed narrated to us, 'Abdillaah bin Saalim from Abee Salamah Sulaymaan bin Saleem, from (Sa'eed) Ibn Jubayr from his father from al-Miqdaad bin al-'Aswad that the Messenger of Allaah (ııı ıııı ıııı ıııı) said:

ıııı ııı ııı ıııı ııııı ıı ııııı ııı ııııııı ıııııı

"The heart of the son of Aadam is agitated more severely than the cooking pot when it boils." [Its isnaad is saheeh, all of its men are thiqaat (trustworthy) and reported by Ahmad, al-Haakim, and Ibn Abee 'Aasim in as-Sunnah (no.226), also declared saheeh by Imaam al-Albaanee in saheehul-Jaami' (5023).]
