Al-Hamdu-Lillaahi Rabbil-'Aalameen was-Salaatu was-Salaamu 'alaa Ashrafil-Anbiyaa.e wal-Mursaleen, wa ba'd: Assalam-o-Alaykum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakatahu Could someone tell me with daleel how the value of Zakaatul-Fitr is determined. I am aware that the Zakaatul-Fitr is to be distributed as food stuff in the form of a saa' of dates or barley etc.. Refer to Fatwa of Allamah Muhammad Ibn Saaleh al-'Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) My question is this and I would appreciate it if someone could get me an answer asap barakhAllaahu feekum. "We are collecting the Zakaatul-Fitr to send to the people of Earthquake hit Kashmir this year. Is it calculated at the rate the food stuff would cost to buy in Kashmir or at the rate it would cost to buy the food stuff in the UK (from where the money is being sent to by the food stuff). We are sending the money to a salafee brother in Kashmir directly who will distribute it for us insha'Allaah. Please could someone give an answer to this question as a matter of urgency, jazakhAllaahu khairan as we need to announce it to the people as soon as possible. Wa Salaam-o-Alaykum Aboo Bilal Nahim

The above question still stands. Abul Abbaas Moosa Richardson responded with the following e-mail barakhAllaahu feekum:
| quote: |
"...Zakaat al-fitr is one saa' (four full double handfuls) of commonly used food, on behalf of a Muslim and each Muslim person, young or old, in his care (one saa' for each of them), in the hands of the poor people before Salaat al-'eed. For example: A man has a wife and three children, and his mother lives with him. Thus, he gives zakaat al-fitr on behalf of 6 people. 6 x 1 saa' = 6 saa' or 6 x 4 double handfuls = 24 double handfuls As for giving zakaat al-fitr to those outside of one's area, then the base ruling here is that it is to be given to the poor people in one's area. As for giving the zakaat al-fitr in cash, then this is not permissible, since it was not done by the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) nor his Companions, while they had the ability to do so. As for giving the zakaat al-fitr (as food) to needy people of another land in times of dire need, or not doing that, then this is a fatwaa for the scholars to answer. While the Muslims should help their brothers and sisters in need whenever and wherever they are in need, so that Allaah will remove their own hardships on the Day of Judgement: (( Whoever removes a hardship from the way of a believer, Allaah removes a hardship from the hardships of the Day of Standing from his way. )) And Allaah knows best." |

So now there are two questions. [1] Is it permissible to send the Zakaatul-Fitr to another land? [2]Is it to be calculated at the rate of the one sending or the one recieving? Please, could someone ask one of the scholars for a fatwaa on this issue. Aboo Bilal Nahim

"With the approach of the end of Ramadhaan, and in wanting to stick closely to the Sunnah, we asked Shaykh Ubayd al-Jabiree concerning Zakat ul-Fitr. Please read the additional articles by Shaykh Uthaymeen and Shaykh Ibn Baz below for further guidance." - http://www.salafitalk.net/st/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=6&Topic=2836
