As salaamu alaikum

Question:

Is it permissible to say Assalaamu Alaiki or Assalaamu Alaika when sending the salaams to a Muslim?  I am seeing more and more Muslims do this and it's not the Sunnah of the Prophet [Salla Allahu Alayhi Wa Salam] but I can not say it's wrong.  I thought I had read that it's not what we were taught to say, but I can't say if what I read was correct or even where I got it from because it was a while ago.

as-salaamu 'alaykum,

Hadeeth #796, in Riyaad-us-Saaliheen (pg. 660, Dar-us-Salam English Print):

quote:

Abu Juraiy Jabir bin Sulaim (radyallaahu 'anhu) reported:  I noticed a man whose opinion was followed by everybody, and noone acted contrary to what he said.  I asked who he was, and I was informed that he was the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam).  I said to him twice:  'Alaykas-salaam, yaa Rasoolullaah.  He said, "Do not say:  'Alaykas-salaamu.  This is the salutation to the dead (in Jaahiliyyah times).  Say, instead:  As-salaamu 'alayka...
(Abu Dawud & at-Tirmidhee)

Hadeeth #846 (pg. 700):

quote:

Abu Hurairah (radyallaahu 'anhu) reported:  The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said, "When Allaah created Aadam ('alayhis-salaam), He said to him: 'Go and greet that company of angels who are sitting there - and then listen to what they are going to say in reply to your greetings because that will be your greeting and your offspring's.'  Aadam ('alayhis-salaam) said to the angels: 'As-salaamu 'alaykum.'  They replied: 'As-salaamu 'alayka wa rahmatullaah.'  Thus adding in reply to him: 'wa rahmatullaah' to his greeting."
(al-Bukhaaree and Muslim)

Note:  The english translation of the last hadeeth states that the angels said: as-salaamu 'alaykum, wa rahmatullaah, but the arabic states that they said as-salaamu 'alayka wa rahmatullaah.

بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم

How the salaam is to be given.

Al Imaam an Nawawi says in he?s book ?Riyaadus Saaliheen? Chapter 132.

It is recommended for the one beginning the salaam to say ?as salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu? that he says it with the Dameerul Jam?a ?kum? كم
Even if the person is only one, and the other should answer ?wa alaikumus salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu? he says it with the waw of conjunction و  so he says wa alaikum.

Assaalamu Alaikum

Alhumdullilah our brother Abu Salmaan quoted from our imaam, Imaam An-Nawawi rahimuallah  from his famous book Riyaadus Saaliheen Chapter: How the Saalams is to be given.
quote:

Imaam Al-Uthaymeen rahimuallah said in his book Sharh Riyaadus Saaliheen explaining the statement of Imaam An-Nawawi:

(In summary Imaam ibn Uthaymeen rahimuallah says): That the ulemaa differ in this matter.  He Imaam ibn Uthaymeen rahimuallah asked the question: So when one give salaam upon one person does he say: السلام عليكم؟ or السلام عليك He says (in summary) that the correct thing to say to one person isالسلام عليك. He uses a proof for this from Al-Bukhaaree in كتاب الاستئذان from:

(The Book of Asking Permission)

No. 5852  - Narrated Abu Huraira:

A man entered the mosque while Allah's Apostle was sitting in one side of the mosque. The man prayed, came, and greeted the Prophet. Allah's Apostle said to him, "Wa 'alaikas Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray as you have not prayed (properly)." The man returned, repeated his prayer, came back and greeted the Prophet. The Prophet said, "Wa alaika-s-Salam (returned his greeting). Go back and pray again as you have not prayed (properly)." The man said at the second or third time, "O Allah's Apostle! Kindly teach me how to pray". The Prophet said, "When you stand for prayer, perform ablution properly and then face the Qibla and say Takbir (Allahu-Akbar), and then recite what you know from the Qur'an, and then bow with calmness till you feel at ease then rise from bowing, till you stand straight, and then prostrate calmly (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease and then prostrate with calmness (and remain in prostration) till you feel at ease, and then raise (your head) and sit with calmness till you feel at ease in the sitting position, and do likewise in whole of your prayer." And Abu Usama added, "Till you stand straight."
(The english translation of the hadith is from http://www.sahihalbukhari.com/sps/sbk/)

(Insha Allah someone who has the Sharh can translate the entire explaination for the benefit of the people.  Because I cannot give an accurate translation).  I ask Allah then you to please forgive me for my shortcomings.
