As salaamu 'alaykum ikhwaan wa akhawaat,

Can someone post how have the Salaf explained the following hadeeth and what are the benefits they took from it? How are we to apply it today?

Rasoolullah (sallallahu ıalayh wassallam) said, ıThe Prophethood will last among you for as long as Allah wills, then Allah would take it away. Then it will be (followed by) a Khilafah Rashida (rightly guided) according to the ways of the Prophethood. It will remain for as long as Allah wills, then Allah would take it away. Afterwards there will be a hereditary leadership which will remain for as long as Allah wills, then He will lift it if He wishes. Afterwards, there will be biting oppression, and it will last for as long as Allah wishes, then He will lift it if He wishes. Then there will be a Khilafah Rashida according to the ways of the Prophethood,ı then he kept silent.

Alhamdulillah today Br. Abu Khadijah al-Jazairee hafidhahullah explained this hadeeth during the Markaz Muadh Seminar "Purification & Education NOT sufism & innovation." I'll give a summary inshAllah.

This hadeeth clearly mentions the manhaj of rectification and establishment of the khilaafah according to manhaj of Rasoolullah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. And it has to be understood in accordance with the hadeeth of Irbaad ibn Saariyyah radiAllahu anhu. Also we have to consider the ayaah "Allıh has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islım). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fısiqın (rebellious, disobedient to Allıh).[Surah Noor 24:055]

Similarly Imam Shafi' was asked if a man is put in position first and then tested or is it the other way around? So, Imam Shafi' replied that a person is first tested then Allah gives them position. And an example is that of Sahaabah. They were first tested in Makkah and then Allah gave them success after that test. InshAllah other brothers and sisters who listened to the lecture could add more or correct any mistakes I've made.

Shaykh al-Albaani rahimahullah commented upon this hadeeth saying, "And it is remote, in my view, to apply this hadeeth to (the khilaafah) of Umar bin Abdil-Azeez, because his khilaafah was close to the rightly-guided khilaafah, and the two types of kingship, the biting kingship and forced, tyrannical kingship had not occurred after (the rightly-guided khilaafah)."
