No, they are not meant to be studied in that order. Refer back to the thread where Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee spoke about the various texts which one should study and in what order.

Of those listed, it is recommended to study them as follows: (1) Kitaab ut-Tawheed, (2) al-Waasitiyyah, then (3) at-Tahaawiyyah. The other two, al-Arba'een an-Nawawiyyah and Nadhm ul-Aajuroomiyyah, deal with two completely different subjects (hadeeth and grammar respectively) which each have their own 'study course', so to speak. Shaykh Muhammad Amaan (and Saalih al-Fawzaan in another thread) outlined a study plan for students in hadeeth as well, so refer to it.

Also, in Mustalah, it's a good idea to start by memorizing and learning al-Bayqooniyyah, so refer to the thread on that, for it contains an audio/text matn and several useful explanations.

The basic principle in tarbiyyah is that which Allaah ?Azz wa-Jal stated in His Book: ?Be Rabaaniyyeen.? [Aal ?Imraan 3:79] And the Rabaanee, as al-Imaam al-Bukhaaree explained, is the one who teaches the people the smaller aspects of knowledge before the larger aspects of it. So when the ?Ulamaa? recommend certain books before others, it is with this in mind ? that the student should study the smaller, more easy books and topics before delving into those which are more vast and difficult.

Thus, the treatises of Shaykh ul-Islaam Ibn ?Abdul-Wahhaab, which are small in size and fundamental in nature, should be studied and understood first, after which a student can expand his scope to that which is more vast, like al-Waasitiyyah, al-Hamawiyyah, at-Tadmuriyyah, and at-Tahaawiyyah. Also keep in mind that Kitaab ut-Tawheed deals almost exclusively with the first rukn of Eemaan ? the belief in Allaah (more specifically, His Uloohiyyah) ? whereas at-Tahaawiyyah (and al-Waasitiyyah to an extent) is a text of al-?aqeedat il-?aammah (general ?aqeedah) and covers all six arkaan as well as some others issues which, after the rise of innovated creeds and methodologies, consequently became part of the Sunnee ?aqeedah (e.g. beliefs regarding the Sahaabah, the Awliyaa?, and even wiping over the socks). Thus, it is more vast in scope and requires more in the way of study.

To further stress this point, Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh explained Kitaab ut-Tawheed in 16 tapes, al-Waasitiyyah in 30, and at-Tahaawiyyah in 52. Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee likewise explained Kitaab ut-Tawheed in 24 tapes (about 2/3 complete), al-Waasitiyyah in 34, and at-Tahaawiyyah in 75. These figures reinforce what is mentioned above.

As for what you have quoted from Shaykh Naasir, may Allaah have mercy on him and join us with him in Paradise, then perhaps the Shaykh?s advice was not intended for those who are total beginners and have little grounding in the fundamentals. In fact, the Shaykh himself wrote a light explanation for at-Tahawiyyah which is more befitting for beginners than that of Ibn Abee il-?Izz at-Tahaawee. I also can?t imagine that a person with no grounding in Usool il-Istinbaat, Mustalah, and Fiqh in general would be able to benefit much from the likes of Subul is-Salaam. Perhaps the intended audience of the Shaykh?s advice needs to be checked, and Allaah knows best.

Final advice: Try to get a copy of Shaykh Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh?s 3CD Audio Library done by Daar Ibn Rajab. I bought a copy for only 30 riyaals (~$10) and benefited greatly from a series of lectures on the methodology and manners of the student of knowledge. During these lectures, the Shaykh discusses many of issues of which you ask. He gave the example of those who delve into deeper books like Fath ul-Baaree, Nayl ul-Awtaar, and Subul us-Salaam without having thoroughly studied al-Arba?een an-Nawawiyyah, saying that such people never really accomplish anything in the way of knowledge and only achieve small benefits from their vast reading due to their not having traversed the Rabaanee manhaj. The same CD set also contains his taped explanations for all of the aforementioned fundamental texts and more, so definitely try to get a copy.

And Allaah 'Azz wa-Jal knows best.

As-salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh,

This thread is highly beneficial to a young taalib, such as myself.  I am now learning the 'arabiyyah specifically for the sake of studying the deen and practicing it in a more complete manner.  Many of the books I believe, insha'Allaah, I can gain access to, but the tapes I do not have a means of obtaining.  Brothers, when recommending books and tapes, could you please make reference to a means of obtaining the works?  So, if possible, can someone mention where we can purchase the books and tapes mentioned in this thread?

Jazak'Allaah khayr,

Umar Abd-ar-Rahman at-Taalib al-Amriki

Almost all of the aforementioned tapes are available at Ibn Rajab. Use the downloadable Word Document index because it has more selections not on the site itself. As I said, the 3CD set they produce for Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh has almost all of his recorded explanations on it, such as al-Usool ath-Thalaathah, Kitaab ut-Tawheed, al-Waasitiyyah, at-Tahaawiyyah, and other risaa'il by his great x 5 grandfather. Not to mention many miscellaneous khutab and lectures beneficial for students.

Almost everything by Muhammad Ibn 'Uthaymeen is available at the official website. This includes monumental audio explanations of Kitaab ut-Tawheed, al-Waasitiyyah, the mandhoomah in 'aqeedah of as-Safaareenee, and the mighty Nooniyyah of Ibn Qayyim. Also, explanations of al-Buloogh, Zaad al-Mustaqni', a little more than the first volume of al-Kaafee, and several treatises in Usool ul-Fiqh, Mustalah, Aadaab, and Grammar are available. The published versions of some of these can be downloaded as well.

Finally, www.sahab.org has many, many books for download. Also try searching their forums because many great eBooks slip through the cracks. And they have some audio as well at www.sahab.fm , such as the explanations of al-Arba'een by both Ibn 'Uthaymeen and Saalih Aal ash-Shaykh, and a lot of tapes by Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee.

Salaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakatuh,

What is the contact information for Masjid-ul Muslimeen?  Next, insha'Allaah, I will be in the New York area within the next two weeks.  Where on Atlantic can I find these book shops?  I am working hard to learn arabic and,I too, have begun to amass a small library in arabic as incentive to study even harder.  I have been reading some of the works of Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah and Imaam Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah as a beginning, in particular the Kitab al-Imaan and Rulings on Salaat.
Does anyone know of stores in the New York area, preferably near Manhattan or Brooklyn, where I and others may obtain more beneficial books and tapes.  Maybe not as dense as the ones I mentioned above.  Feel free to email me at Umar64@hotmail.com if any have more information on local bookshops in the New York area.

Jazak'Allaah khayr
