Bismillah alhumdulillah was salaatu was salaamu 'ala rasulullah.  wa ba'ad.

Assallaamu alaikum warahmatullah

Can the duaat who post on this forum please see if they can advise regarding this issue that I have barakAllahu feekum.

When sitting in a gathering is it from the sunnah of al-Mustafa (sallallaahu alaihi wassallam) that everybody sits in a circle and the quraan be passed around and whoever wants to recite would do so and everybody else has to be quiet?  As it has been claimed that this is done so that people do not fall into vain talk or idle gossip.  Is there any proof from the sunnah for this.
If this is the case then does it not fall into the baab of Ibadah.  Where the following principle would come into effect; 'Everything in the deen is Haraam until a text is brought forth to show that it is Halaal...'

Also we know the Messenger (sallallaahu alaihi wassallam) said on the authority of Abu Hurairah (radiAllahu anhu), "Let him who believes in Allah and the Last Day either speak good or keep silent..." Hadith is Mutafakun alaih.  (Bukharee and Muslim)

So please if anybody has any info then please forward it as if it is something from the sunnah then inshaallah we can act upon it and earn more reward and if it is not then we can keep away from it.

Jazakamullahu khairan

Ikhwaan barakAllahu feekum the question has been answered.  I have found a referance in the Book by Shaikh ul-Islaam ibn Taimiyyah entitled 'The Right Way' pages 55 and 56.  (the english version)

Basically the shaikh says that it is something that is permissable and he brings many proofs from them is Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah)
