  The language of the ARABS is the language of the Book of Allah which is the greatest of speech that was also revealed upon the best of mankind Muhammad the Prophet of Allah peace and blessing be upon him { IN THE PAIN ARABIC LANGUAGE }ash-Shura ayat 195. Allah also stated in surah ar-Rad { AND THUS HAVE WE SENT IT DOWN AS A QURAN IN ARABIC }, He also stated in surah az-Zumar { AN ARABIC QURAN WITHOUT ANY CROOKEDNESS IN ORDER THAT THEY MAY AVOID ALL EVIL AND TAQWA }, He also establishes the supremacy of the language of the arab in surah ash-Shura { AND THUS WE HAVE REVEALED TO YOU oh Muhammad A ARABIC QURAN }. So for the one who has reason and intellect even if he isn't himself profound in the arabic language you will find him implimenting what Allah has made easy for him to learn in his house hold. Rather you won't find him allowing the terms like DADDY AND MOMMY triumph over ABI AND UMMI, because what is found in the kitab wa sunnah in reality is better for the Muslim. Did Ibraheem khaleel ar-Rahman { alaihi salaam } say in Surah Maryam ayat 43 YAA DADDY! VERILY THERE HAS COME TO ME OF THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WHICH CAME NOT UNTO YOU. Instead he addressed his father in this ayat with { YAA ABAATI!} instead of any other term for father. Also we could also see this same example from the Hadeeth of the messenger of Allah { sallahu alayhi wa salaam } when he said " I WAS PERMITTED BY MY LORD TO VISIT THE GRAVE OF MY UMMI " Noticed the messenger of Allah never used another term for mother he clearly used UMMI, so how is it we let other languages prevail over the language of the Muslims and Islam? Verily the messenger of Allah never allowed the speech of the bedouin to prevail over the speech of Medina the Muslim state. Another clear BAYAAN is the word for the late-night prayer. Whats established in Islam from the kitab wa sunnah is that the late-night prayer has two names Ishaa and Atamaa. Ishaa is the most famous and mosted used because our Lord mentions this name in surah Nur ayat 58 { AND AFTER THE ISHAA PRAYER }, but also the messenger of Allah { sallahu alaihi wa salaam } used the name Atamaa refering to Ishaa whiched was narrated by Aboo Hurairah and collected by the two shaykhs Bulkharee and Muslim in their saheehs. History and the religion is proof that the most beloved and most used term that the messenger of Allah used for the late-night pray was Ishaa because it was revealed in the book of Allah and the term Atamaa was the speech of the bedouin and he only spoke with it occassionally. So with this how is it we let the rough, warlock lanaguages of the Kuffar prevail over the language of the Kitab wa Sunnah? I beg Allah by His glorious attributes to allow us to become steadfast in learning His book and the sunnah of His messenger in the language it was revealed in. { AND THUS HAVE WE SENT IT DOWN AS A QURAN IN ARABIC }

Love for Ahlus-Sunnah wa Hadeeth Aboo Zaahid

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-?Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked the following questions:

What is the ruling on learning English nowadays?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Learning it is a means. If there is a need for it as a means of calling people to Allaah, then learning it may be obligatory. If there is no need to learn it, then do not let it occupy your time or distract you from things which are more important and more beneficial. People vary with regard to how much they need to learn English. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded Zayd Ibn Thaabit to learn the language of the Jews. Zayd ibn Thaabit is reported to have said: ?The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) commanded me to learn the language and writing of the Jews for him. He said, ?By Allaah, I do not trust a Jew to write my letters for me.? So I learned it, and no more than half a month passed by before I had mastered it. I used to write it for him if he wanted a letter written, and I would read it for him if a letter was sent to him.? (Narrated by Abu Dawood, Kitaab al-?Ilm, Baab Riwaayat Ahl al-Kitaab; Imaam Ahmad (in part 5, p. 186; al-Haakim, al-Mustadrak, part 1, p. 75) declared it a saheeh hadeeth, and al-Dhahabi agreed with him).

Learning English is but a means; if you need it you may learn it, and if you do not need it then do not waste your time with it.

On another occassion, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-?Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked the following question:

What is your view on a seeker of knowledge learning English, especially if he wants to use it for da?wah and to call others to Allaah?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

Our view on learning English is that it is a means and it is a bad means if the aim is bad. But the one thing that we must avoid is using it instead of Arabic. That is not permitted. We have heard some foolish people speaking English instead of Arabic, and some of the foolish people who are dazzled by the West, whom I regard as lackeys (of the West), teaching their children to use the greetings of the non-Muslims, and teaching them to say ?bye-bye? when departing, and so on.

Because using this language, instead of Arabic, which is the language of the Qur?aan and the noblest of languages, is haraam. It was narrated that the salaf (the pious predecessors) forbade speaking in the tongues of the non-Arabs.

With regard to using it as a means of da?wah, there is no doubt that this is obligatory sometimes. I did not learn it and I wish that I had learned it. On some occasions I have been forced to use an interpreter who could not fully express what I wanted to say.

I will tell you a story of something that happened to me in the mosque of Jeddah airport, with some men from the Islamic Awareness organisation. After Fajr prayer, we were speaking about the Tijaani sect and how it is a false sect that apostatised from Islam. I began to say what I knew about them until a man came and asked me for permission to interpret my words into Hausa.  I gave him permission, and he started to interpret. Then a man came rushing in and said, ?This man who is interpreting for you is praising the Tijaaniyyah.? I was astonished and I said, ?Inna Lillaahi wa inna ilayhi raaji?oon (Truly, to Allaah we belong and truly to Him we shall return).? If I had known this language I would not have needed these cheaters. The point is that knowing the language of the people whom you are addressing is undoubtedly important so that you can convey the information to them. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

?And We sent not a Messenger except with the language of his people, in order that he might make (the Message) clear for them?

[Ibraaheem 14:4]

The following fatwa is recorded in 'Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa?imah', 12/133

Is learning English haraam or halaal?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

If there is a need to learn English or any other foreign (non-Arabic) language for a religious or worldly purpose, then there is no reason why one should not learn it. But if there is no need then it is 'makrooh' (abhorrent) to learn it.

Ibn Umar (d. 84H) said: "Every innovation is misguidance, even if the people see it as something good." (Reported by Abu Shaamah no. 39)

Baarak Allaahu feekum Akhee Jalil for encouragning us to speak 'Arabic to the best of our abilities in our houses!

May Allaah help us to learn 'Arabic an d teach it to our families!

I also have some observations that deserve some attention, in shaa' Allaah.

1) "So for the one who has reason and intellect even if he isn't himself profound in the arabic language you will find him implimenting what Allah has made easy for him to learn in his house hold. Rather you won't find him allowing the terms like DADDY AND MOMMY triumph over ABI AND UMMI, because what is found in the kitab wa sunnah in reality is better for the Muslim."

I do not teach my children to say "ummee" and "abee" so I hope there is still some reason and intellect left in my brain.  I do teach them most nouns in arabic though - they say "thallaajah" instead of refrigerator, "mukayyif" instead of air conditioner, "kitaab" instead of book, etc.

When they use these nouns in sentences it usually makes sense, as opposed to some people's children who may say to my children, "where's your ummee?" (meaning where's your my mother?" which makes no sense.  So until my children get a little older, I will not teach them dhamaa'ir or verbs, so that they can understand what they are saying, and what they are saying is actually correct.  (I have five children, the oldest is four years old )

So they call me Dada, and their mother is Mama.  Actually, if we were to say that Islaam gives some prescedence to this phrase over others, in terms of a non-Arab speaking and learning arabic, then we need to bring proof for that.  Because superiority or precedence is not given to one thing or another except with daleel.

2) "Did Ibraheem khaleel ar-Rahman { alaihi salaam } say in Surah Maryam ayat 43 YAA DADDY! VERILY THERE HAS COME TO ME OF THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WHICH CAME NOT UNTO YOU. Instead he addressed his father in this ayat with { YAA ABAATI!} instead of any other term for father."

Actually, we don't seek to use the kalaam of Ibraaheem as a proof in the arabic language, since Ibraaheem did not speak Arabic.  The arabic language dates back to roughly 150 years before the revelation of the Qur'aan.  As for Allaah's Statement in Arabic quoting Ibraaheem, then it of course is a proof.  So in it is a proof for the use of the word Abati, but not because it was used by Ibraaheem, rather because Allaah spoke it.  If this is not clear, perhaps I could elaborate on it in shaa' Allaah.

May Allaah reward you.  Your reminder about the importance of the arabic language is much needed.

Moosaa

May Allah bless you yaa! Abaa Abbas. I ask Allah to continue to bless you and allow you to aide the general people like myself. In reference to my statement for the one with intellect and reason....Mashaa'Allah from what I know about you its clear that you have intellect and reason and may Allah aide you and decree for you to continue to teach your noble family whats better for them. In conclusion about the issue of Ibraheem { alaihi salaam } this could be understood as a mistake but want was clearly meant by the statement was what you later brought to attention.
