Keeping a Secret and Not Spreading It You can be entrusted with many things- for example, with the task of safekeeping wealth, of a fulfilling a duty, or of preserving a secret.

When a person divulges a secret, he betrays his trust, an action that is from the signs of the hypocrites.

Abu Hurairah radhiallahu anhum reported that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم said,ý the signs of the hypocrite are three:

when he speaks, he lies; when he promises,

he breaks his promise;

and when he is trusted,

he betraysýý.

Jaabir Ibn ýAbdullah radhiallahu anhum related that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said,ý When a man says something and then turns around {to make sure that no one is listening} then it, what he said is a trust {i.e. a secret that you must keep} related by At Tirmidhee who said t his is Hasan:

Abu Daawood and in grading his narration Al Albanee said Hasan.

When you are entrusted with a secret, you may not reveal it to anyone, no matter how close a person is to you. The prophet sallallahu alyhi wasalam made it clear that a secret is a trust and that it must be kept safe. Even if a person does not outright say, ýthis is a secret; don tell anyone about it, ýbut instead simple turns around to make sure no one is listening, you must treat what he says as a secret. Thaabit related a hadeeth from Anas radhiallahu anhum in which he importance of keeping a secret become clear.

Anas radhiallahu anhum said,ý The Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلمcame to me while I was playing with other children. He صلى الله عليه وسلم extended greeting of peace to us, and he then sent me on as errand; so I became delayed in returning to my mother.

When I arrived home she said, what kept you?ý I said the Messenger of صلى الله عليه وسلم sent me on an errand.ý She radhiallahu anha said,ý do not tell the Messenger of Allahýs secret to anyone.ýýAfter relating this hadeeth Anas said to Thaabit,ýBy Allaah, were I to tell it to anyone I would have told it to you, O Thaabit.ý Bukharee related it with this wording.ý The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم confided a secret to me and since that time I have never told it to anyone.Umm sulaim asked to me {reveal it to her} but I didnýt tell it to her.ý Related by Muslim
