Ibnul Qayyim (rahmatullaahi alaihi) said; And whoever considers the condition of the Sahaabah (radiyallaahu anhum wa ardaa) will know that they were involed in the utmost of performing deeds at the same time in deep fear (of Allaah). We however have joined between falling short - rather neglect and waist - and feeling safe! (from Allaah) Here we have as-Siddeeq (abu Bakr radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) saying; I would be happy that I was a strand of hair on the side of a believing slave. (Ahmad, az Zuhd) and he used to cry much and would say; Cry! and if you can't cry then pretend to cry. (Ahmad, az Zuhd) When he would stand for salaah it was though he was a stick, twig out of fear of Allaah the Mighty and Majestic. (look in taareekh al khulafaa) Qataadah said; it has reached me that abu Bakr used to say; I would love that i was but grass, so the cattle would eat me. And we have Umar (radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) who read surah Tur until he reached the aayah ' Indeed the punishment of your Lord is approaching' cried, and cried so much until he became sick and the people visited him. He said to his son as he was dying; Woe to you! put my cheek on the ground, i hope that He (Allaah) will have mercy on me. then he said; Woe to my mother if He doesn't forgive me (three times) then he died. He (radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) would be patroling Madeenah by night and would pass by and hear (someone reading) an aayah, then would spend days in his house sick and the people would visit him. (Ahmad, az Zuhd) and he (radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) had two black marks on his face from crying. And we have Utmaan (radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) who used to stand at the graveside and cry until his beard would become wet (with tears). (Tirmadhi, ibn Maajah) and he said; If I was between the paradise and the fire and I did not know which of the two I would be ordered with, I would choose to be ashes before I know which of the two I am heading. (Ahmad, and Na'eem in al Hilyah) And we have Ali (radiyallaahu anhu wa ardaa) who used to become scared of two things, Long life and the following of desires. he said; As for long life, then causes one to forget the hereafter, and as for following desires then prevents one from the truth. Indeed the Dunyaa has passed, going away, and the hereafter is approaching. For each of them has children, so be from the children of the hereafter and do not be from the children of the Dunyaa. For today there is action and no reckoning, and tomorrow reckoning and no action. Ahmad (az Zuhd) (end, I summerized it as not to make it too long, please return back to the book ad Daa'u wad Dawaa) Fa yaa Subhaanah! we tend to forget that our salaf were the companions of the prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) and that those who came after them like Hasan as Basari, Sufyaan ath thowri, Sha'bi (and all of the a'imma) tried their best to follow the companions as the prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) ordered! These are our Salaf!!! Wallaahu A'lam, wa sallallaahu alaa Nibiyyinaa Muhammad. abusalmaan an-Nimari
