The Excellence of As-Saum (The Fast) during the first ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah

Ibn 'Abbas (May Allah be pleased with them) reported: The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) said, "There are no days during which the righteous action is so pleasing to Allah than these days (i.e., the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah)." He was asked: "O Messenger of Allah, not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah?" He (sallallaahu alayhi wasallam) replied, "Not even Jihad in the Cause of Allah, except in case one goes forth with his life and his property and does not return with either of it."

[Al-Bukhari].

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh

The title was taken from the book "Riyaadus-Saliheen."

However there was a narration mentioned in last Friday's Khutbah that from one of the Taabee'in.  That he mentioned from one of the wives of Muhammad salallaahu alayhi wa salem that he fasted the first 9 days of Dhul-Hijjah.  It was said by Shaykh al-Albanee rahimahullaah.

InshaAllaah I'll attempt to get the exact narration and from the correct source.

In addition we know that it is from of the best of deeds performed for Allaah.

InshaAllaah the Khutbah will be available for purchase from SalafiBookstore.

Hunaydah ibn Khalid narrated upon the authority of his wife who said: "some of the wives of the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam told me that the Prophet sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam used to fast the Day of Aashoora, the 1st nine days of Dhul-Hijjah and 3 days out of every month.

Narrated by Imam Ahmad, 21829; Abu Dawood, 2437; classed as daıeef in Nasab al-Raayah, 2/180, but classed as saheeh by Imaam al-Albaani.

Imaam An-Nawaawi said with reference to fasting the 1st 9 days of dhul Hijjah: "It is extremely preferable to do so."

WAllaahu aalam.

the hadith actually says "the tenth of zul hijjah" not the first ten days. i checked it. the one who sent me the hadith made a mistake.

In Saheeh Muslim (1176), 'Aa'ishaha is quoted as saying: "I have never seem him fasting during the ten ever."  And in a second wording: "The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam did not fast during the ten."

By his ordering of the hadeeth, it can be understood that Imaam Muslim - may Allaah have Mercy on him - understood that this was referring to the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, not the first ten days of Thul-Hijjah.  Both can be referred to as "al-'Ashar", the ten (days/nights).

So that brings us to one possible understanding: that 'Aa'ishah was negating that he fasted during the last ten nights of Ramadhaan, as he used to fast at night, sometimes connecting his day to another, sometimes breaking fast at suhoor time.

What I recall the scholars mentioning is what has been quoted from 'Awn al-Ma'bood, that 'Aa'ishah saying: "I did not see such and such..." does not mean that it did not happen.  This goes for whether her intent was the ten days of thul-Hijjah or the last ten nights of Ramadhaan.

There can be no contradiction understood from a practice done and encouraged by the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam) that was not witnessed by some of the other Companions.

BaarakAllahu feekum. JazaakumAllahu khayraa for the beneficial information.

Sister, I would like to bring the following to your attention. In the footnotes, it says:
quote:
[1762]. The tenth of Dhu al-Hijjah is called 'Ashurah. It is commendable to fast for two days, on the 9th and 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah or 10th and 11th of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Should the "Dhu al-Hijjah"s here should be "Muharram" instead?

And on the last line, it says:
quote:
The excellence of fasting during the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, and specially on the 19th, has been unanimously accepted ('Awn al-Ma'bud, II, 301).
Should "19th" here should be "9th"?

بارك الله فيك وزجاك الله خيرا

asalaamulaikum

yes, footnote should refer to month of Muharram, not dul hijjah.  The Ashura fasting is the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th, to be different from the Jews who just fast the one day.

And we must not fast the 1oth of dul hijjah as that is Eid and we are not allowed to fast on Eid, however the first 9 days we can fast, especially the 9th.

May Allah accept our fast tomorrow.

Wasalaam
