Combining and Shortening the Salaah Author: Imaam Abdul Azeez Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy upon him) Source: Tahaarah wa Salaah Pg 227 Translator: Abu Anisa Abdul Hakeem Q: Some people (are under) the notion that combining and shortening the salaah (prayer) together is an obligation. (They would say) there is no combining without shortening or no shortening without combining; therefore, what is your opinion in this matter? Is it better for the traveler to shorten without combining or combine without shortening? A: Allah has legislated for (the traveler) to shorten his prayer. It is permissible for him to combine, but not an obligation. What is binding upon him is to shorten and not to combine. To leave off combining is better if the traveler is going to reside (in a place) without departing. As the Messenger of Allah (sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam) did at Mina (during the Hajjatul Wadaaıa). Verily, he (sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam) shortened his prayer without combining them, but he (sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam) did shorten and combine (his prayer) in Guzwah Tabook. This demonstrates the broadness in the issue. The Messenger (sallAllaahu alaihi wa sallam) use to shorten and combine (his salaat) when he was abroad, not residing in a specific place. As for the combining, it is a broad issue. It is permissible for the sick person and also permissible for the Muslims in their masaajid at the time of rain to combine between Magrib and Isha, Dhuhr and Asr. However, it is not permissible for them to shorten (the prayer) because shortening the prayer is specifically for the traveler only.
Abdullah b.Umar May Allah be pleased with them both said: 'Every bidah(religious innovation) is misguidance, even if people think it is good.' Al-Lalikaii in Sharh Usıl Iıtiqıd Ahl Al-Sunnah wa Al-Jama'ah Vol 1. P134, no.111

As salaamu alaikum, Barakallahu feek, I would like more clarity on the issue of being a traveller. I don't know if it is shaytaan or my ignorance on the issue, but I cannot determine whether or not I'm a traveller. I've read the fatawa by Shaykh Uthaymeen and others and I know that it is not a specific distance, but it is what is considered travel by the people. Where I live it is normal to commute 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more to and from work every day, and I commute 79 miles (127 kilometers) to and from work every day. I never leave the house with the intentions of travelling so I do the full prayers at work and other than work. How can I rid my heart of doubt and know when I am a traveller and when I'm not a traveller?
