The following is a summary translation.

Manners of walking with the Scholars by Sheik Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz Aqeel

Q: We brothers are colleagues, we have a Sheik that we honor and give respect; is it legislated for us to walk behind him or to his right or to his left? Sometimes if the Sheik is not present some of the brothers will push the other brothers forward with each person wanting his friend to walk in front of him, and this also occurs when entering (doors or buildings) but the friend will not allow except that the other brother precedes him. Therefore my colleagues have requested that I write to you this question.

A:  (Sheik ibn Aqeel said) whoever is walking with a person and the person is older than him or more knowledgeable than him then he should be on the right side of the person, thus giving (the more knowledgeable person) the position that the Imam has in the prayer. And if he is walking with a person of a lesser position than him then he should have the person walk to his right. And if they are the same then it is preferred for him to leave his left side for his companion; in order that he does not restrict for him his area for spitting, and blowing the nose and things like this. And it should also be said that it is preferred for the group to walk behind the elder and if they walk at his side then there is no problem; like the Imam in the prayer.

And it comes in Sahih Muslim in the first book of faith the statement of Yahya ibn Ya?mar that he and Hamid ibn Abdur Rahman were walking on the side of Ibn Umar may ALLAH be please with them. And it was said that it is preferred to walk on the right side in general to leave the left side for spitting and other than that.

Hafidh ibn Al Jawzee may ALLAH have mercy upon him said, ?If someone is given permission to enter and he has with him someone who is older than him by one day, then the older person should proceed to enter first.? And it has been narrated by Ibn Umar may ALLAH be pleased with them, from the Messenger of ALLAH peace and blessings are upon him, that he said Jibril ordered me that the elder (should receive preference), and he said, give preference to the elder.

And Malik ibn Magul said, I was walking with Talha bin Musraf towards a narrow passage way so he proceeded me, then he said to me, ?If I knew that you were older than me even by one day I would not have proceeded you?, ibn Al Jawzee said, if the younger person is more knowledgeable then it is more befitting to give him preference. Then he narrates from his chain from Hussein ibn Musoor he said, ?I was with Yahya bin Yahya and Ishaq bin Rahuwaiya one day when we were visiting the sick; so when we faced the door Ishaq lagged behind and he said to Yahya, you precede oh Abu Zakariya, you are older than me. He (Yahya) said, Yes I am older than you but you are more knowledgeable than me; so Ishaq proceeded. End of his speech.

Ibn Muflah (may ALLAH have mercy upon him) said, ?And this requires the one who has priority that he should precede, and this is working in accordance with the Sunna, and that is suitable from him. And the most knowledgeable person should always be given preference, and no consideration should be given to age, or righteousness or anything.? And age is given preference over piety and religiousness; as is apparent in his speech in (al-Mustaw?ab).

And if two are the same in knowledge and age then it is preferred to put forward the one who has the superior deen or piety or what resembles that?, ibn Al Jawzee mentions after this a hadith, (He is not from us who does not honor our elders, and have mercy on our young, and recognize our scholars). Narrated from Imam Ahmad, and the wording of the hadith of Ahmad is from Ubaida bin As Saamat, (They are not from my nation, the one who does not honor our elders, and have mercy upon our young and recognize our scholars). Narrated from Haakim also with the wording, (they are not from us) to the end?He mentioned it in the explanation of Manzoomat al-Adaab. And ALLAH knows best.
