1345.Narrated 'Umar:When Allah's Messenger, sallallaAllahu alayhi wassallam, raised his hands in supplication he did not lower them till he wiped his face with them**.(At-Tirmidhi reported it). It has other authorities like:The hadith reported by Ibn 'Abbas which occurs in Abu Da'ud's book, and others, and they confirm that it is a hasan hadith.

**it thus becomes known to us that after having a supplication completed, one is advised to rub his hands on his face. This is dur to the fact that while making a supplication, one's hands get filled up with the Mercy of Allah. This is thus rubbed onto one's face since the face is the noblest of the bodily organs.
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmattullallah,
ya ikhwaani, wa akhawaati what i need to know is what is the hukum on this hadeeth and what benefit can be derived from it so that it can be implemented. BarakaAllahu Feekum
wa assalam

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

quote:
In its chain is Hammaad ibn 'Eesaa al-Juhanee al-Waasitee.  Most of the scholars have declared him to be dha'eef (unreliable as a narrator).  He (Ibn Hajr) followed suit in "at-Taqreeb" and said, "Dha'eef, from the 9th category (*), he died in the year 208.

(*) 9th category: the last of the students of the taabi'oon, like: ash-Shaafi'ee, at-Tayaalisee, and 'Abdur-Razzaaq as-San'aanee.

[From: Ibn Baaz's notes on Buloogh al-Maraam, #1494, p.826 of the Imtiaaz printing]

Shaykh 'Abdullaah al-Bassaam (may Allaah have Mercy on him) said:

quote:
It has supporting narrations that strengthen each other, thus the hadeeth gains strength from these routes, and a number of scholars have chosen this position (that it is authentic), from them: Ishaaq, an-Nawawee (in one of his two known positions on it), Ibn Hajr, al-Munaawee, as-San'aanee, ash-Shawkaanee, and others.

[From Tawdheeh al-Ahkaam, 7/557 of the Asadee printing, 1423]

As for the statement:

quote:
**it thus becomes known to us that after having a supplication completed, one is advised to rub his hands on his face. This is dur to the fact that while making a supplication, one's hands get filled up with the Mercy of Allah. This is thus rubbed onto one's face since the face is the noblest of the bodily organs.

This is similar to what al-Ameer as-San'aanee and Shaykh Siddeeq Hasan Khaan said in their explanations of Buloogh al-Maraam, with the exception of the statement, "This is dur [due] to the fact that while making a supplication, one's hands get filled up with the Mercy of Allah. This is thus rubbed onto one's face."

NOTE: These are not from the words of al-Haafith Ibn Hajr in Buloogh al-Maraam, they are likely a translator's note or a translation of another explanation.

And Allaah knows best.

As-salaam-u-alaykum,
in the English translation of Shaykh Al-Albaanee's book, The Prophet's Prayer Described, there is Appendix 8 which talks of the weakness of the ahaadeeth mentioning wiping the face with the hands after Du'a(supplication)-From Irwaa' al-Ghaleel (2/178-182). The Shaykh rules the hadith from Tirmidhi to be da'eef as well as a couple of other similar ahaadeeth. Refer to the 3 pages of that appendix for more details.
Was-salaam
