As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.

I have a couple of questions about the miswaak. I had a discussion with a brother and a couple of questions he asked got me wondering.

1. Is there any clear proof for the position that the miswaak; (the root of the araak {Salvadora Persica} tree used to brush teeth) will carry with it more reward with Allah than using any other form of toothbrush?

2. In the hadeeth of Abu hurairah in which he reports the Prophet (salAllahu alayhe wa sellem) saying "If I did not fear to cause hardship to my Ummah I would have ordered them to use the siwaak with every wudoo. [Reported by at-Tirrnidhee (no.22) who said: Hasan Saheeh, and others. Al-Albaanee declared it to be saheeh (Takhree; ul Mishkaat, no.390)]- from :Sifaatul Wudhu An Nabi;
Is this hadeeth showing strong recommendation to

A. Clean the mouth vigorously during wudhu using any toothstick?
or
B. To clean the mouth vigorously during wudhu, using a miswaak.

Basically are there any text praising the use of the Araak roots specifically.

I remember my days going with the jamaat; We used to want to beat people over the head if they didn't have a miswaak!

Would appreciate some clarity on the issue.

Barak Allahu feekum Ikhwaan.

wa salaam,

Yusuf

wa 'alaykumus-salaamu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh,

Yaa Abaa Yusuf, baarak Allaahu feek, I know you were referring to the Tableeghee sect when you said, "I remember my days going with the jamaat," and its correct to say something like that linguistically, however the phrase "the jamaa'ah" has a specific meaning (the "firqah naajiyah", what the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhe wa sallam was on along with his Companions) and the sects that have deviated away from THE JAMAA'AH can not be referred to as "the jamaa'ah", rather they are nothing but pure FURQAH (division).  Like I said it is permissible linguistically, based on the idea that you were using "THE JAMAA'AH" to refer to something that preceded you, al-'ahd ath-thihnee (العهد الذهني), but since the sect was not mentioned, what you said may not be understood how you meant it.  May Allaah increase you in goodness...

Bismillah

As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah.

Wa feekum barakAllah, ya Moosa.

But first off, my kunya is Abul Hasan not Abu Yusuf. I thought you were a strong student? (smile)

I appreciate your side note, jazakAllahu kheir. I am pretty sure most people with some time in Islaam under their belt knew what I was referring to, but there was definately room for misunderstanding.

The same goes with the other terminology the Tableeghis use for being with them and I'm sure you've all heard it: "Brother have you been out in the path of Allah?"

Our Shaykh Al-Albaani (rahimahullah) has cleared this up explaining that this term (Fee sabeelillaah) has a specific shariah meaning referring to those who are fighting Jihad and are elligable to recieve something from the Zakaat. I don't remember all of what he said but I believe this is the jist.

Akhee, you took all that time to reply to me and explain this and that, but played me out on my original question?

...SubhanAllah. (smile)

The Miswaak brothers, the miswaak!

ThabbatakAllah 'alal Islaami wa Sunnah.

wa salaam,

Abul Hasan Yusuf Al-Nebraski
