akhi, i was asking whether the qur'an and sunnah are equal, as i have heard it in one of the recordings, and basically i wanted some proofs in relation to it.

so if some one could elaborate on this, would be appreciated.

jazakAllahu khair

this is from the footnotes of the book, a glimpse at the way of the companions:

The majority of the scholars of Ahl-Sunnah say the Qur'ân and the Sunnah go hand in hand, not one before the other. One does not refer to the Sunnah only when nothing is found in the Qur'ân. Rather whenever one needs to look for a verdict one goes back to the Qur'ân and Sunnah, together. Shaykh al-Albânî, in Silsilat-ul-Ahâdîth ad-Da'îfah (vol 2 no.881), says: " ... rather it is obligatory to refer to the Book and Sunnah, together, without differentiating between them, since the Sunnah explains the general (mujmal) verses of the Qur'ân, restricts its unrestricted verses, specificies its general verses, as is known ... "

There are many sayings from the Salaf showing that this view was held by them. Imâm al-Awzâ'î and Imâm Yahya bin Kathîr and others have said: "The Qur'ân is in more need of the Sunnah than the Sunnah is of the Book. The Sunnah is Qâdiatun (conclusive) over the Book and the Book is not conclusive over the Sunnah." Reported by ad-Dârimî (1/117). Similar narrations from the Salaf concerning this topic can be found in the books of the Salaf like al-Ibânah of Ibn Battah.

The noble companion al-Miqdaad ibn Ma'di Karib said: The Prophet sallallaahu alaihe wa sallam said:

"Indeed, I have been given the Qur'aan and with it something similar to it." Collected by al-Imaam Ahmad in his Musnad.

So the Ulamaa of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah deem that the Sunnah is equal to the Noble Book of Allaah.

And that is with regards to them as legislative sources, because they are both from Allaah, the Qur'aan being al-Wahy al-Matluww or Recited Revelation and the Sunnah being is al-Wahy gharu Matluww or the Unrecited Revelation.

This is one of the differences between the two of them. That Allaah made obligatory upon us to recite His Words as an act of Ibaadah in the prayers, but this is not the case with the Pure Sunnah.

jazakamullahu khair brothers, mashaAllah good explanations. i have also found an article @ www.thenoblequran.com entitled the book and the wisdom (the sunnah), and it brings 7 ayaat from the Qur'an in which "the book and the wisdom" has been mentioned; here's one

Al-Baqarah (2):129

"Our Lord! Send amongst them a Messenger of their own (and indeed Allâh answered their invocation by sending Muhammad Peace be upon him ), who shall recite unto them Your Verses and instruct them in the Book (this Qur'ân) and Al-Hikmah (full knowledge of the Islâmic laws and jurisprudence or wisdom or Prophethood, etc.), and sanctify them. Verily! You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."

And may Allâh shower His blessings and mercy upon our Prophet Muhammad, his posterity and his Companions.
