ASH-SHAYKH ?UBAYD IBN ?ABDILLAAH IBN SULAYMAAN AL-JAABIREE, HAFIDHAHULLAAH, ANSWERS CONCERNING WHETHER WE AQUIRE AND BENEFIT KNOWLEDGE FROM THE ?AKHBAAR AL-AAHAAD OR NOT

Q: Is the saying that the ?Akhbaar al-Aahaad (i.e. those reports that do not reach the level of being Mutawaatirah) benefit and convey ghalabat adh-dhann (i.e. knowledge that is not certain) from the sayings of the Mubtadi?ah (Innovators)?

A: There is not between the Sahaabah (Companions), nor the ?A?immah (Imaams) of the Taabi?een (those who came after the Companions), nor the Four ?A?immah, nor those who are after them of the People of Knowledge (al-?Ilm), Excellence (al-Fadl), and Leading Position (al-?Imaamah), any dispute (nizaa?) concerning the ?Akhbaar al-Aahaad and do they benefit and convey speculation (adh-dhann) or knowledge (al-?Ilm). That did not exist until there came Ibn al-Mulaqqin and those after them for they are the ones who brought about this way. So those who have preceded from the People of Knowledge are unanimously agreed on that they benefit and convey knowledge, in regards to Belief and Creed (al-?Aqeedah) and also in regards to other than it of the Rulings (al-?Ahkaam).
