as-Salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh. A number of brothers have been asking me about the "ZamZam Institute for Learning Arabic as a Second Language" in Makkah. So I got in touch with its founder and he generously invited me to his house and spent time discussing his project with me. So I am happy that Allaah has facilitated a way for me to inform you that: [1] The ZamZam Institute is a Saudi Government registered institute. He showed me the paperwork and his official license. [2] It is a private institution, not government run. The founder wants to provide a way for more people to come to Saudi Arabia to learn Arabic. [3] Since it is not government funded, the founder needs to cover the costs of running the institute. He has estimated that the yearly costs to fund a student for one year is about $4000, so this is to be paid by the student. He mentioned to me that the visa itself for each student costs SR2000, and the iqaamah (temporary residency) costs almost that much. So there goes $1000 from the $4000 right away. The other $3000 helps to pay the teachers' salaries, administration, rent for the building, etc. He agreed to my suggestion to provide an account for each student and refund any remaining balance at the end of the year. [4] This will be the first year of the school's operation, in shaa' Allaah. Students expecting to study this year should be patient and realize they are helping their brother to start something that we hope will be a source of great benefit for Western Muslims. Delays and unexpected problems should be expected in the first year of operation. [5] I do not know anything about the teachers, their qualifications, their 'aqeedah, and what not, since I have not met any of them. The founder is actually still hiring at this time. I advised him to hire skilled teachers that are specialized in teaching Arabic as a second language, teachers with the correct 'aqeedah who will not take advantage of their position to insert any innovative beliefs into their lessons. He agreed to the importance of this advice. I advised him that Western Muslims are very concerned for the correct 'aqeedah and manhaj, and they are cautious about anyone trying to connect them to people that the scholars have warned against. He assured me that the goals of the institute are centered around teaching Arabic only, and the students are free to study at the lessons of the scholars on their own time. This is what I have come to know about the ZamZam Institute in Makkah, and I do not sanctify anyone or anything above Allaah, and Allaah is the true Reckoner of affairs. We hope that our brothers and sisters will make du'aa' for the success of this project, and that Allaah grants its founder firmness and a great reward for his efforts. Are there personal experiences and/or new information validating/updating the previous information posted? Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
