The dictionary Lisaan al-'Arab by Ibn Manthoor [d.711] was compiled from five existing dictionaries: [1] Mu'jam Tah-theeb al-Lughah of al-Azharee [2] al-Muhkim of Ibn Seedah [3] As-Sahaah of al-Jawharee [4] the book of Aboo Muhammad al-Bazzee [5] an-Nihaayah of Ibn Atheer Additionally, Lisaan al-'Arab was organized just like as-Sahaah of al-Jawharee except that al-huroof al-muqatta'ah (like Alif-Laam-Meem at the beginning of al-Baqarah) are placed at the beginning of Lisaan al-'Arab and at the end of as-Sahaah. QUESTION for the baahithoon: Why did Ibn Manthoor place al-huroof al-muqatta'ah at the beginning and not the end of his dictionary? Why did he oppose al-Jawharee in this? Lisaan al-'Arab is made up entirely of non-referenced quotes from these books, and nothing is from the speech of Ibn Manthoor, the compiler. Thus, it is not proper to say, "Ibn Manthoor said," when quoting from Lisaan al-'Arab. Shaykh Saalih Aali Shaykh mentions this on some of his tapes. QUESTION for the baahithoon: Since Ibn Manthoor had compiled what was in those five dictionaries, then does a researcher still need to refer to those dictionaries if he has Lisaan al-'Arab? As salamu alaikum The answer to the first question is: Ibn Manthoor (Rahimahullah) put al-huroof al-muqatta'ah in the beginning of his book so that it would not be a "carbon copy" of As-Sahaah of al-Jawharee. The answer to the second question is: Yes, a researcher still needs to refer to those dictionaries even if he has Lisaan al-'Arab in order to know where to properly reference what is contained in Lisaan al-'Arab. Your answer to the second question is correct, baarak Allaahu feek, however there is another [perhaps more important] reason that directly affects the correctness and completeness of one's research. To add to what you have said, Aboo 'Ubayd al-Qaasim ibn Sallaam said, "From the barakah of knowledge is to reference each statement to the one who said it."
