Al-Allaamah Dr. Shaykh Saalih Fawzaan was asked the question:
"What is the ruling regarding refraining from food for a limited or unlimited period of time, specifically in the prison, in a manner that this hunger strike becomes the only method or means to call those person's (attention) inside the prison to his appeal for human rights within prison?

He replied:

Refraining from food to protest if it hurts oneself or causes his death, is not permissible because of the statement of the Most High "and do not use your own hands to destroy yourselves."
Sooratul Baqarah 2:195
And because of the statement of the Most High

"And do not kill yourselves."

Sooratun Nisaa 4: 29
If, on the other hand him refraining from food will not harm him and it leads to a permissible purpose or goal, then there is no problem with this that is, if the person is oppressed and desires to free himself by way of (the hunger strike) that injustice or oppression "

Al-Allaamah Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-Uthaymeen was posed with a similar question and he replied:
Some people go on strikes - refraining from on the eating and drinking until they die of starvation so (the result is that) killed themselves and they - Allaah forbid - are people of the Hell-fire."

Then one student asked: If a hunger strike was for the interest or betterment of Islaam (could he go on a hunger strike)?

He answered: "It is not permissible if it leads to death."
