wa 'alaykum us-salaam wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh, i do not know if this is the ruling for strikes/work stoppages, but these are some statements of the 'ulamaa concerning demonstrations/protests: http://www.tazkiyah.org/readarticle.php?II=IKWN-00006 http://www.tazkiyah.org/readarticle.php?II=BDAH-00016 here is a lecture about democracy, if i remember correctly it has some info about demonstrations/protests too (since they are a by-product of democracy): http://www.spubs.com/sps/sad/mp3.cfm?scn=dl&LeID=43 abu hussam shahid williams

Barakallahu fiqum I am sure that somehow there may be a connection between the strike and work stoppages and protests, but i can't work with what I think. This is in reference to the contract dispute with Verizon in the US. They have allowed the Jehovah's Witnesses not to participate even though they are members of the union. The Muslims need a definitive statement that it is not permissible in Islam to be involved in such activity in order to get the same exemption without having to suffer the fitnah that comes from union membership.
